In late January a group of us zipped over to Eastbourne on the train to visit the Towner Art Gallery. After a delicious lunch in the cafe we explored the work of Melissa Gordan and Margaret Mellis.
Melissa’s solo exhibition - Liquid Gestures - was thought provoking and opened up a dialogue about feminism and family.
Margaret Mellis (1914-2009) was one of the last survivors of the modernist authors that gathered in the St. Ives Cornwall in the 1940s. Unfortunately her work was largely overlooked. This exhibition showed her confidence with colour and form her abstract sculptures created from found items and reminded one of our artspace members of an “artistic” Wobble.
Many of us were inspired by her paintings of flowers on opened up envelopes and packaging. Her work opened up new vistas for our own work and the possibilities of self expression
