On Wednesday 9th August, nine Artspace Studio Members ventured over to Towner Eastbourne to see the Barbara Hepworth exhibition as well as works from The Living Collection. A big thank you to Towner Eastbourne for their kind hospitality and support!! Here is some of the positive feedback from our Artspace artists!
Sophie really enjoyed the visit, especially the The Living Collection that included paintings set in and around Eastbourne, from different periods.
Tom thoroughly engaged with the trip:
"I enjoyed the exhibitions, they were quite inspiring. I thought it was a nice gesture that the tickets were complimentary and I enjoyed talking to people from the different Artspace sessions. I really liked the drawings."
Emily was impressed by Barbara Hepworth's great skill and craftsmanship. She was especially taken by her drawings of medical staff in hospital operating theatres. She was previously unfamiliar with this body of work and felt that the hand studies were sensitive, delicate and intricately rendered. Hands are notoriously difficult to depict so she was most impressed!
Jane was also inspired by the same body of work and says:
"I love Barbara Hepworth's work as Sculpture, but it was her drawings that blew me away. The sensitivity of line conveyed the compassionate care of the Doctors and nurses in the operation room. The rendering of colour, light and shade was exquisite, her drawings made me feel humble and tearful. Her Sculptures bring me joy."
Eleana was amazed by the Barbara Hepworth but mostly Towner Eastbourne as a whole:
"I loved a lot of the quirky artwork. They even have a cinema with alternative arty films. I am absolutely up for seeing more exhibitions there and films as well. It was a really enjoyable visit with members of my lovely Artspace crew and there was even a ceramic cat, as well as a film of a Barbara Hepworth speech in the exhibitions there. I found out lots of new stuff about her and was pleasantly surprised at the art of hers they showed!! I am up for going again to see more art there in the future. I recommend going there for people who love good art.
The Gallery is very easy to navigate and the exhibitions are well spaced out. There's a great relaxed and cheery atmosphere."
Like Sophie, Nick said:
"Going to the Barbara Hepworth exhibition was both inspirational and encouraging in my own artistic endeavours.
The Living Collection enabled me to look at the Sussex landscape in new ways, as well as showcasing different techniques and perspectives. I look forward to revisiting Towner Eastbourne."
Finally, Ann gave the following Testimonial:
A week and a day has passed by since visiting the Barbara Hepworth exhibition at Towner Eastbourne.
Not knowing what to expect in the viewing, my time was totally enthralled in the artist's work. From paintings, sculpture and drawings ranging from the 1930's through to 1960's space travel and technology, which have continuing effects to this very day. Thank you for a splendid afternoon."
All in all, a successful, highly recommended and beneficial day out was had by everyone at Artspace Brighton. It was great for the morale and wellbeing of Studio Members and Volunteers alike!
