Inspiring Trip to the Courtauld Gallery in Somerset House, London.

On Wednesday April 26th, 10 Artspace Members ventured over to London to visit the Courtauld Gallery's Permanent Collection as well as Peter Doig's artworks. A huge thank you to the Courtauld for their kind hospitality!! The positive feedback from Artspace Members has been lovely and here are but a few comments from them:

Eleana felt that there was an interesting variety of artwork. There was a lot of colour and it was good to be in London with a nice group of people!

Suzi enjoyed the huge variety of work in the Permanent Collection. She hadn't been to the Courtauld in years and it was lovely to go back!

Emily thought it was lovely to see the Impressionist artworks we all know from reproductions, in the flesh. She enjoyed the ethereal vibrancy and painterly qualities, that were also reflected in Peter Doig's painting style.

Tessa and Andy observed that the Somerset House surroundings were spectacular and the collection was very interesting.

"It was good to see a variety of artwork from many different periods and to see works you've only seen in books before, especially in the Impressionists' gallery. Peter Doig was very impressive from an intersection of Caribbean art to music."

Coral felt fortunate to join us. She enjoyed the Peter Doig exhibition in particular.

"Although the artist's name was familiar to me, the man and his works were not; so it was fascinating to learn about his background and see the connections of place and people reflected in his work.

For me, the Trinidad paintings and vibrant use of colour were reminiscent, and perhaps inspired by Gauguin. My personal favourite being "Alice at Boscoe's", though it was interesting to see a similar use of colour in his latest London Canal painting.

The Courtauld is a treasure trove of wonderful artworks generally, and this exhibition was a memorable bonus".

Finally, Nick got a lot out of it too. He said:

"The trip will be inspirational for many years to come, and I hope to incorporate cues from the exhibition into my own work. The visit to London also benefitted my mental health by helping improve my self-confidence and inspiring me to make my own visits. Thank you!"

I think our positive and constructive feedback speaks for itself. We clearly all got a lot out of our well-spent time at the Courtauld and it is well worth a visit!
