In late August a group of Artspace Studio Members and Volunteers ventured over to Fabrica in Central Brighton to see and interact with the collaborative exhibition My Crazy Family Golf by Artist Lisa Watts and her Dad Gordon. Playing Crazy Golf was a therapeutic way for Lisa and her Dad Gordon to bond and cope with her Mum’s ongoing Mental Health issues.
Fabrica’s Director Liz Whitehead introduced us to the piece giving us the context in which to be creative. The Artspace team then paired off and began to play.
The golf stations were constructed by Dad Gordon in collaboration with his daughter’s concept to celebrate the memories of her late Mum. Each piece when successfully completed triggered a voice recording capturing familiar expressions and exclamations of the artist’s mother.
Each of us responded to the work differently and it generated a lot of conversation and debate about how families deal with Mental Health Issues.
We acknowledge it was made with love and wonder how the mother would react to the piece if she was still alive.
